At 69.8917 hectares in size the fertile soils of this farm sees many types of grapes being produced. Of the total size, 43.73 ha are used exclusively for the production of grapes: 12.56% of which is used for Chenin Blanc whereas the remaining 87.44% is used in Merlot, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Ruby Cabernet, Shiraz, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec.
Paarl Mountain in the distance, its striking silhouette casting a shadow on the town during the evenings, is seen from the rooms of the house. This west-facing piece of the home is over 200 years old and the workmanship is akin to that era. Double volume ceilings, huge open rooms, cottage-like windows and lustrous wooden floors mark aspects synonymous with Cape Dutch homes. The other half of the home is just over 90 years old.
If you enter the home from where you park your car under a majestic oak tree you walk through an arched entrance into a patio area. Here you find a water fountain and views over a large section of the vineyard. The aforementioned silhouette of Paarl Mountain’s contoured escarpment is found at the end of the valley’s stretch in the distance.
Walk through the door (above you find a storage loft) into the open plan kitchen. With granite counters, built-in cupboards and oven and hob the kitchen also has a scullery hidden behind a door.
Off the kitchen is a bar which marks the first room of the original home. From here you can gain access to a dining room. Being a large room means that any size dining table will fit in here and the display cabinet built into the wall can display your finest kitchenware.
Go through the large door and you find the billiards room. This room is massive. The large cottage windows allow for lots of sunlight to penetrate and illuminate this room and just beyond the door that leads to the outside is a manicured garden that has the vineyards and mountains as the backdrop.
The next room, accessed by a long passage, is the first of 3 bedrooms, and just next to this is a large lounge complete with built-in fireplace and door that leads to the garden. This sizeable room is the ideal place to enjoy any day of the year, no matter the climate. In winter the fireplace will have burning logs giving off heat and in summer the large windows and door will be open allowing for the breeze to cool the room down.
At the end of the passage is the main bedroom complete with built-in cupboards and a full en-suite bathroom. This bedroom forms part of the additional section of the home built-on.
The farm has a winery with three 9000 litre fermenters; one 5000 litre storage tank; and one 2000 litre storage tank (all of which are chilled). Amongst the other things found in the cellar are a portable storage tank (1500 litre capacity with auxiliary chilling) and a 400 litre portable mixing tank.
Also on the farm is a manager’s house with three bedrooms, a bathroom, kitchen/dining room, living room and braai area; and three cottages for one family occupation and one cottage for two families.
